Rest Easy Interstate Services

Created at the table by regular human faits, the player of Neon Drift.

Overview

Started long ago as privatized roadside facilities along interstate highways, Rest Easy has since grown into the owner/operator of most of Knight City’s transportation infrastructure: toll roads, rest areas, charging stations, bathrooms, and effectively anywhere it’s legal to park overnight or access basic services. Outside the city they own the interstates themselves; inside the city they own the major transportation arteries connecting the spires. If you don’t pay for access, you don’t move — everything from vehicle tolls to (in the more extreme table framing) subscription fees just to use sidewalks.

Functionally represents the privatization of public infrastructure, and the criminalization of existing somewhere without paying for it. Works hand-in-glove with Urban Access Development, which builds the destinations Rest Easy charges to reach.

Van Life

Rest Easy’s clearest victim: Van Life, a nomadic collective that groups like Neon Drift’s family belonged to before it collapsed. A former Van Life leader sold the group’s services to Rest Easy as enforcers, then tried to leverage that access into free reign across Rest Easy’s whole network. Once caught, Rest Easy destroyed the group “with extreme prejudice.” The arcology keys Van Life lost in that collapse — full access to maintenance lanes, ramps, and toll controllers — were never fully patched out of the network, and resurfaced in Mara Sato’s hands during Session 1. Van Helsing suspects Camper Van Beethoven, a former Van Life member, of colluding with Rest Easy to keep that exploit open.

Corporate Risk and Recovery / Special Projects

REIS’s internal risk division, run in part by senior director Iona Glass — who, as of Session 2, is also confirmed to be Mara Sato’s mother, a fact not commonly known within the company. Tied to a further internal unit called Special Projects, confirmed during Session 1 (via hacking that tripped REIS’s own network security) to function as a cleanup operation — preventing messes from reaching corporate leadership and preserving plausible deniability. REIS Six’s own network security division actively monitors for and responds to intrusions.

Camera Surveillance — Palantir and Flock

REIS owns both Palantir and Flock, real-world-named surveillance camera companies operating throughout Knight City. Flock in particular holds a monopoly on cameras and staffs active human monitoring behind them, not just passive recording — “in case someone shows up to ruin the camera, there’s someone there watching them.”

Known Facts

  • Controls tolled road access between spires and levels in Knight City.
  • Owns/operates most interstate rest-stop infrastructure outside the city.
  • Responsible for Van Life’s downfall after a Van Life leader tried to exploit an enforcement contract; the exploited access keys were never fully patched out and resurfaced in Session 1.
  • Owns REIS Six, an arcology that’s effectively a city within a city.
  • Owns the surveillance camera companies Palantir and Flock.
  • Runs a Corporate Risk and Recovery division, including a “Special Projects” cleanup/deniability unit and an active network security division.
  • Actively cancelling the surviving arcology-key routes one checkpoint at a time as of Session 2 — the exploit is finally being closed, years late.
  • Iona Glass travels with a substantial security detail: roughly six suited men, four unmarked black Cadillacs, and one unmarked black van. Bullfrog compromised the van in Session 2 and used it against them in Session 3, tracking it and then ramming it into one of the Cadillacs. The detail wears body armor under their suit coats and carries shotguns. About six of them died in the ramen-shop breakout, and three Cadillacs were wrecked or shot up.
  • REIS Six’s internal roads are divided by barriers. Some are toll gates, and some are real executive-access checkpoints that keep the rabble out of the arcology’s nicer districts.
  • Pays badly. The Sato job settled at two cred per crew member.

Relationships

  • Urban Access Development — informal infrastructure partner; UAD builds up, Rest Easy tolls the roads to get there.
  • Van Life — crushed the group after a failed exploitation attempt; source of Neon Drift’s backstory grievance.
  • Mara Sato — employee who went dark with the arcology keys; hunted by the crew on Iona Glass’s orders.
  • Iona Glass — senior director, Corporate Risk and Recovery / Special Projects.

Appearances

  • Session 0 — Introduced by Neon Drift’s player and established as the force behind Van Life’s collapse.
  • Session 1 — Iona Glass hires the crew to recover a rogue employee and the arcology keys; REIS’s Special Projects division and network security are both directly encountered.
  • Session 2 — Takes delivery of Mara Sato in the REIS Six parking garage and pays the crew out. Iona’s relationship to Mara revealed; REIS Six becomes the target of the crew’s breakout.
  • Session 3 — Iona Glass’s security detail is cut apart in the breakout, and the crew uses REIS’s own van and REIS’s own road barriers against it.
