Knight City
The crew’s home turf — a retro-’80s cyberpunk megacity built on the same bones as “Night City,” reskinned and respelled (K-N-I-G-H-T) as a table in-joke that stuck as the setting’s actual name. Table consensus at Session 0 leaned toward classic Blade Runner-with-bigger-shoulder-pads over Fifth Element-style excess — heavy neon and chrome, always night, a strong Neo-Asian aesthetic layered over the city’s look and culture, and flying vehicles rare enough to be a status symbol rather than a norm.
Verticality
The table’s defining image for Knight City: a city of heights, built both up and down.
- The spires — the city grows upward in dense vertical arcologies. Newer, better-maintained construction goes up top for the wealthy; older stock lower down is left to rot because Urban Access Development has no incentive to maintain housing for people who can’t pay for better.
- The Under Sector — beneath the surface city, an area hollowed out and mined for black salt. NSMC holds the (widely ignored) monopoly on operating down there. It’s also home to an underclass, black-market “wetware” mutation, and an unlicensed blood-sport arena scene.
- Connective tissue — roads and skyways link the spires at many different levels (“layer cake” roads), largely privatized and tolled by Rest Easy Interstate Services. Getting from one building to another, or up/down a level, routinely means paying a toll.
No settled canon yet on exactly how tall/deep the city gets, or firm district names beyond “the spires” and “the Under Sector” — left loose for play to fill in.
Government & Power
There is effectively no functioning central government — described at the table as “bread and circus,” a shell that gives ordinary people something to believe protects them while corporations actually run things. Two ideas were floated and left open rather than resolved:
- A corporate advisory council / corporate republic — corp heads sitting on a nominal government body that quietly dictates policy.
- A singularity-level AI that technically holds the government mandate but has grown so advanced it’s disengaged from humanity, doing the bare computational minimum to keep the mandate satisfied while corporations fill the vacuum. If used, it reportedly maintains a public-facing avatar/figurehead (described as an unsettling greeter-type presence on one of the spires) that pretends to be a person.
Kessauer Dynamics’ city-management AI, Daedalus, was floated as a smaller, less capable subcontractor system beneath whatever runs at that higher level — the “urban OS,” not the singularity itself.
Known Facts
- Black salt, a rare-earth mineral mined from the Under Sector, is the key ingredient in modern cybernetics/“wetware” and causes mutation in people exposed to it long-term.
- Table joked about (but didn’t rule out) the food supply including recycled human tissue — sold as “synth meat,” post-apocalyptic wastelands outside the big cities meaning no large-scale traditional livestock farming. Played as dark cyberpunk flavor; not confirmed canon.
- Real-world flavor reference used at the table: in the original tabletop Cyberpunk game (not the CDPR video game), “Night City” spans from San Francisco to LA as one continuous city, based on Morro Bay, CA. Knight City doesn’t have to follow this — noted for flavor only.
Appearances
- Session 0 — Table collaboratively built the setting: verticality, Under Sector, black salt, transport/tolling, government structure, and Neo-Asian retro-’80s aesthetic.
